Minnesota

    The Minnesota Department of Public Safety oversees the distribution and issuance of personalized and customized vanity license plates. Minnesota does not allow you to determine if your specific lettering on the license plate is available online. Personalized license plates in Minnesota can be ordered by mail or at a Minnesota DVS Office. License plates can only be ordered by a registered owner and the plate you order must be registered to an Minnesota vehicle at the time of issuance.
  • Types of Vehicles: The Minnesota Department of Public Safety allows personalized license plates on passenger class vehicles, one-ton pickups, motorcycles and self-propelled recreation vehicles (any gross weight).
  • Fee: The fee for a personalized license plate in Minnesota is $100 plus a $10 filing fee in addition to the regular renewal fee.
  • Number of Characters: In Minnesota, they allow a maximum of 7 characters for passenger vehicles and 6 characters for all other vehicle types. You can use any combination of Letters A to Z, Spaces, Hyphens and Numbers 0 to 9 . All plates must contain one letter.
  • Limitations: Personalized vanity license plates in Minnesota are subject to approval by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The website also states that the following are not allowed:
    • Replicates any existing series of license plates or a series reserved for future use.
  • Is My Plate Available?: Minnesota does not allow you to determine if your plate is available online.
