The Washington State Department of Licensing oversees the distribution and issuance of personalized vanity license plates.  You can determine if your specific lettering on the license plate is available online.  However, to order your personalized license plate, you must do it through the mail or in person.  License plates can only be ordered by a registered owner.

Types of Vehicles in Washington

Washington state allows personalized vanity license plates on passenger cars, trucks, trailers (large and small plates) and motorcycles.

Fee for Personalized Plates in Washington

The fee for the personalized license plate in Washington state is dependent on the type of vehicle you are licensing and the background of your plate.  To determine the exact cost of the personalized license plate in Washington, lookup your Washington state vehicle licensing office.

  • Initial cost for personalized plates with standard mountain background. Yearly plate renewal fees will apply.
    • Passenger Vehicle: $169.25
    • Truck: $168.50
    • Trailer: $117.25
    • Motorcycle: $87.25
  • Initial cost for personalized plates with a special design. Yearly plate renewal fees will apply.
    • Passenger Vehicle: $209.25
    • Truck: $208.50
    • Trailer: $157.25
    • Motorcycle: $127.25
    • * Keep Kids Safe plate Add $5 to above

Number of Characters

In Washington state, the number of characters for a large plate for an automobile or trailer is 1 to 7 characters, including letters, numbers, hyphens and spaces.  For small plates for motorcycles and small trailers, you can include 1 to 6 characters, including letters, numbers, hyphens and spaces.

Limitations

Personalized vanity license plates in Washington state may not include vulgar, racial, ethnic or indecent messages, and may not include unusual characters (like @, % or &).  For a specific list of requirements, visit the Washington State Personalized Plate Requirements Page.

How to Order a Vanity Plate in Washington

To order your personalized Washington State vanity license plate, follow these steps:

  • Decide what you’d like to have on your plate.
  • Find out the initial cost for a plate.
  • Complete a Personalized License Plate Application form.
  • Submit your application and fees (to look up fees for your personalized plate, visit your Washington state vehicle licensing office):
    • Take the form to the King County Records and Licensing Services and pay the required fees; OR
    • Mail the form and required fees in a check or money order, payable to Department of Licensing, to:
      • Special Plate Unit
      • Department of Licensing

  • Update your Good To Go! account, if needed. If you have a Good To Go! electronic tolling pass, be sure to update the contact information on your account with the Department of Transportation:
